P2P Parental Bill of Rights
“The rights of parents to the care, custody and nurture of their children is of such character that it cannot be denied without violating those fundamental principles of liberty and justice which lie at the base of all our civil and political institutions, and such right is a fundamental right protected by this (first) amendment and amendments 5,9,and 14.” (Doe v. Irwin 441F Supp 1247; U.S. D. C. of Michigan (1985)”
- Parents have the right to direct the education and upbringing of their children the way they see fit without interference from government entities. The Supreme Court is clear on this issue: Pierce v. Society of Sisters, 268 U.S. 510, 534-35 (1925) (the state may not interfere with “the liberty of parents and guardians to direct the upbringing and education of children under their control.”)
- Parents have the right to make decisions with respect to their children.
- Schools shall respect parents’ values and beliefs.
- Schools shall keep parents informed about their children’s well-being.
- Parents have the right to be heard at school board meetings without retaliation.
- Parents have the right to protect their children at school and advocate for safety at school.
- Schools shall not be exempt from state or federal obscenity laws.
- Schools shall respect and serve the needs of all students
- Parents’ rights are affirmed by the United States Supreme Court that characterized a parent’s right to raise his or her child as “perhaps the oldest of the fundamental liberty interests recognized by this Court.” Troxel v. Granville, 530 U.S. 57, 65 (2000).
